Abstract

201,058. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Revere Rubber Co.). Aug. 17, 1922. Balls.-A method of making hollow rubber articles, such as tennis balls, consists in applying to a vulcanized rubber centre which has been inflated to its finished size covering sections of fabric, the fabric being vulcanized to the action of heat and pressure. According to one way of carrying out the method, the centre is formed of a rubber capsule, Fig. 2, into which is injected one-sixth of a fluid ounce of a porefilling material and which is vulcanized and then inflated to its finished size in a gauge 9, Fig. 4. The centre and the fabric section, which are of the form shown in Fig. 6, are coated with successive layers of gum and vulcanizable cement and are vulcanized together in a mould. The gum and cement may be applied to the edges of the fabric section, and the current may contain an accelerator, such as litharge. In a modification, the article may be reinforced by a layer of stockinette inserted between the centre and the cover.
