Abstract

Semi-spherical golf ball cover blanks consisting of polyethylene or a substantial proportion of polyethylene and one or more of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, balata, gutta percha, high styrene butadiene resin, are moulded at a temperature greatly exceeding 300 DEG F. and then vulcanized by immersion in a solution of a symmetrical dialkylaryl methyl peroxide such as bis-(a ,a 1-dimethyl-benzyl) peroxide, e.g. for 20 minutes to 2 hours, at 70 DEG F. to 150 DEG F., removing from the solution and heating, e.g. to 250 DEG F. to 350 DEG F. for from 30 minutes to 3 hours. The peroxide may be dissolved in benzene, xylene, toluene, naphtha, gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, or a ketone, preferably to form a 5% solution. The moulded cover blanks may if desired, be first mounted on a wound core and compression moulded to form a golf ball which is then immersed in the peroxide solution and heated, after removal therefrom; alternatively the moulded cover blanks after immersion in the peroxide solution may be mounted on a wound core and the assembly simultaneously cured and compression moulded. As described in Specification 815,364 the cover blank mixture may include titanium dioxide, to eliminate the necessity for painting and an autoxidant.
