Abstract

A golf ball consists essentially of a core comprising a cured synthetic cis-1,4-polymer of a conjurgated diolefin and a synthetic trans - 1, 4 - polymer of a conjugated diolefin, and an outer cover fixed to the core and comprising a synthetic trans-1,4-polymer of a conjugated diolefin, the latter polymer having a trans-1,4 content of not less than 90 mole per cent. Unsubstituted diolefins such as 1,3-butadiene and piperylene are preferred for forming the cis-1,4-polymers, and substituted polymers such as isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and chloroprene are preferred for forming the trans-1,4-polymers. The core compositions comprise a powdered, cured cis-1,4-polybutadiene and an uncured trans-1,4-polyisoprene or trans-1,4-polychloroprene with fillers such as barytes, lithopone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron filings, lead filings or litharge, and optionally with vulcanizing ingredients. Copolymers of ethylene/propylene and ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene may also be included. The cover compositions comprise trans-1,4-polyisoprene or polychloroprene, vulcanizing ingredients, fillers such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, litharge, and optionally antioxidants, natural rubber, and the copolymers butadiene/styrene, ethylene/propylene, and ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene.ALSO:A golf ball consists essentially of a core comprising a cured synthetic cis-polymer of a conjugated diolefin and a synthetic trans-polymer of a conjugated diolefin, and an outer cover fixed to the core and comprising a synthetic trans-polymer of a conjugated diolefin, the latter polymer having a trans content of not less than 90 mole per cent. The core composition (Division C3) is moulded into a ball shape and the outer cover composition (Division C3) is moulded into two semi-spherical shells which are fixed to the core by vulcanising, fusing or adhering them to the core.
