Abstract
677,229. Reverse gear. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., JEWITT, D. E., and COULING, S. A. April 28, 1949 [April 20, 1948], No. 10899/48. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXV] An eddy current coupling has three members 5, 6, 7 concentrically mounted, the member 5 being the driving member while the members 6, 7 are the driven members, at least one of the said three members is provided with a field system which cuts the surface(s) of the other member(s) in which eddy current may be induced. The said field is selectively directed into either of the other members in order to transmit power selectively to the driven member 6 or 7 from the driving member 5. Fig. 1 shows an irreversible prime-mover 1 which can drive the power shaft 2 in either direction through the three-member eddy-current coupling 3 and a gear system 4. The members 6, 7 are respectively connected with concentric outer and inner shafts 8, 9. The outer shaft 8 carries a pinion 10 which meshes with a gear wheel 11 on shaft 2. The inner shaft 9 carries a pinion 12 which meshes with pinions 13, 13' on lay shafts 14, 14' carrying a pair or pinions 15, 15<SP>1</SP> which in turn mesh with the wheel 11. Thus transference of power in either direction can be effected by the selection of the correct driven member by energizing one of the respective field systems 6, 7. The same result can be achieved by arranging the field system on the driving member 5 by employing salient poles on the inner and outer surfaces of the member 5.
