Abstract
676,563. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium or its alloys. FREUD, H. M. March 17, 1950 [April 14, 1949], No. 6746/50. Class 41. A method of coating articles of aluminium or aluminium alloys to impart to them an enamelled appearance consists in treating them electrolytically in a bath containing zirconium in the form of a complex zirconyl sulphuric or zirconyl oxalic anion, the pH value of the bath being at most approximately 2. Direct current or alternating current may be used, with a voltage of at least 15 volts. In the case of direct current the cathode is preferably of aluminium, though it may be of, for example, carbon or lead. The article after electrolysis may be coloured by immersion in a bath of organic colouring matter.
