Abstract
676,473. Generating combustion products under pressure. RICARDO, H. R., and ALCOCK, J. F. Feb. 22, 1951 [March 7, 1950], No. 5734/50. Class 51 (i). In a combustion chamber in which primary air enters through guide vanes B<SP>2</SP> in the same direction as fuel delivered by the nozzle C, and in which orifices G are provided for the admission of additional or dilution air, trough-shaped baffles or scoops G<SP>1</SP> project inwards into the combustion chamber at the downstream side of each of one or more of the orifices, the open side of the baffle facing upstream. Some of the dilution air is thereby carried into the central core of hot gases while the remainder spills over the sides of the baffles. The baffle may have a deflector J2 on its inner surface, or the sides of the baffle may have notches so as to cause some air to spill over the sides. The baffles may be stub-like or may extend diameterically across the chamber, and in the case of an air-jacketed combustion chamber the baffles may extend through the apertures into the jacket. The baffle may be U-shaped to provide a streamlined contour for the flow of air over it. Holes may also be formed in the baffle to allow air to pass therethrough.
