Abstract
676,189. Treating latex; purifying rubber. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 22, 1951 [April 13, 1950], No. 1608/51. Class 70 Purified natural rubber is obtained by removing non-rubber serum constituents from Hevea rubber by creaming, adding a small amount of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid or alkali or ammonium salts thereof, or salts thereof with polyvalent metals naturally occuring in the latex, and then coagulating. The tetra-acetates are preferably added in the proportion of 0.002 to 0.2 per cent to a latex which has been at least twice creamed by ammonium alginate to produce a latex with not more than 0.25 per cent nitrogen and is then coagulated with formic acid. The tetra-acetates may be those of calcium, magnesium, iron or manganese all of which ions are present in natural latex. Sodium hexametaphosphate may also be added to the latex.
