Abstract
675,859. Lattice towers. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and BOWLING, W. F. April 18, 1950 [May 18, 1949], No. 13234/49. Classes 20(i) and 20(ii) In a lattice tower of tapered form comprising a number of super-posed stages, each of which is formed by three or more panels, wherein the lower corners of each panel are connected to the diagonally opposite corner by a bracing member, each bracing member is divided into two or more sections which lie entirely on the inner side of a straight line joining its ends and the junctions of the sections are connected by tie members to the top corner of the panel subtended by the bracing member. The bracing member sections are pin jointed together or are riveted or otherwise rigidly connected together and as each section is shorter than the diagonal the inherent tendency to buckle under compressive stress is reduced. Fig. 2 shows a panel having bracing members comprising two sections 8, 9 and 13, 14 and Fig. 4 shows bracing members comprising three sections 20, 21, 22 and 23, 24, 25, while Fig. 5 shows a tower with panels having bracing members comprising two section of which the lower section 8 or 13 is the same length as the tie member 11 or 16. The panels may have unstressed members 18 in the areas adjacent the corner legs and one or more similar members may connect the upper frame member to one of the bracing sections.
