Abstract

Guanidine sulphate is prepared by heating urea with diammonium imidodisulphonate and/or triammonium imidodisulphonate, if desired in the presence of added ammonia. Suitable solvents and/or diluents may be used. The preferred temperature for the reaction is in the range 190-300 DEG C. and it may be carried out at superatmospheric pressure. In the examples urea is heated with different proportions of diammonium imido-disulphonate; in some cases additional ammonia is added and as a result sone triammonium imidodisulphonate is formed as an intermediate product. The diammonium and triammonium imidodisulphonate may be prepared from ammonia and sulphur trioxide. The triammonium imido-disulphonate when heated under pressure yields guanidine sulphate.
