Abstract

The resistance to hydrolysis of linear polymers which contain a substantial proportion of hydrazide (-CO.NH.NH.CO-) or 1,3,4-oxdiazole <FORM:0654273/IV (a)/1> links, is increased by heating them with hydrazine or ammonia. The links are converted to the unsubstituted, or 4 substituted, 1,2,4-triazole type. The initial polymer may be made by reacting a dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof with 1 to 2 moles of hydrazine for each mole of acid. The treated polymer, preferably in its final form of filament, fibre or film, may be further treated with a polyfunctional after-treating agent, such as the acylating agents or aldehydes described in Specification 613,497. In examples: (1) a hydrolysable polymer was prepared by heating mono-hydrazine sebacate under nitrogen and then heated in an autoclave with (2) aqueous hydrazine hydrate, or (3) aqueous ammonia.
