Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the waving of hair comprises an aqueous solution of a mixture of a water-soluble bisulphite and a water-soluble cationic thermosetting resin which is the polymeric reaction product of epichlorohydrin and a polyamide derived from a polyalkylene polyamine containing -CnH2nunits in which n is an integer greater than 1, or a mixture of such polyalkylene polyamines, and diglycolic acid or a C3-C8 saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The spacing of the secondary amine groups in the polyamide molecule may be increased by replacing up to 60% by weight of the polyalkylene polyamine by an aliphatic diamine, e.g. ethylene diamine, propylenediamine or hexamethylene diamine or a heterocyclic amine, e.g. piperazine. The polyamide may be reacted with the epichlorohydrin in a mole ratio of epichlorohydrin to secondary amine groups of the polyamide of 0.5:1 to 1.8:1. The bisulphite may be sodium, potassium, ammonium or ethylamine bisulphite or a corresponding metabisulphite which hydrolyses in the presence of water to yield the bisulphite. The treating solutions may have a pH of 6.5-7.2 adjusted by the addition of alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide.ALSO:Hair is waved by treating it while arranged in the desired configuration with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble bisulphite and an aqueous solution of a water-soluble cationic thermosetting resin which is the polymeric reaction product of epichlorohydrin and a polyamide derived from a polyalkylene polyamine containing -CnH2nunits in which n is an integer greater than 1, or a mixture of such polyalkylene polyamines, and diglycolic acid or a C3-C8 saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or with an aqueous solution containing both the bisulphite and the cationic thermosetting resin. The spacing of the secondary amine groups in the polyamide molecule may be increased by replacing up to 60% by weight of the polyalkylene polyamine by an aliphatic diamine, e.g. ethylene diamine, propylenediamine or hexamethylene diamine or a heterocyclic amine, e.g. piperazine. The polyamide may be reacted with the epichlorohydrin in a mole ratio of epichlorohydrin to secondary amine groups of the polyamide of 0.5:1 to 1.8:1 The bisulphite may be sodium, potassium, ammonium or ethylamino bisulphite or a corresponding metabisulphite which hydrolyzes in the presence of water to yield the bisulphite. The treating solutions may have a pH of 6.5 - 7.2 adjusted by the addition of alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide. After shampooing the hair may be wound on curlers and treated successively with aqueous solutions of the bisulphite and cationic thermosetting resin or simultaneously with a mixture of the two, or it may be treated with the bisulphite and resin, wound on curlers and again treated with the bisulphite and resin. Application to the hair may be effected by spraying on an absorbent wad. The hair may then be left for 30-60 minutes at room temperature or for shorter periods at higher temperatures, e.g. about 38 DEG C., attained by placing a plastic cap over the hair, washed and dried.
