Abstract

A process for modifying the physical properties of a polyamide urea polycondensate having a polyamide urea recurring unit of the formula -(OC-R-NHCONH-R-CONH-R1-NH)-in which R is a linear alkylene radical having 3 to 7 carbon atoms and R1 is a linear alkylene radical having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, the said polyamide urea units in the polycondensate being linked consecutively or through other units which are capable of forming amide linkages with the said polyamide urea units to form a copolymer, comprises contacting the polycondensate with aqueous formaldehyde solution at room temperature. The polyamide ureas which may be made by condensing o :o -diamine salts of 1:3-bis(o -carboxyalkyl) ureas may also contain residues of dicarboxylic acids and diamines or lactams. The examples describe the reaction of aqueous formaldehyde with fibres made from 1:3-bis(o -carboxypropyl) urea and hexamethylene diamine and 1:3-bis(o -carboxyamyl) urea and tetramethylene, pentamethylene, hexamethylene, heptamethylene and decamethylene diamine.
