Abstract
A non-gelling copolyamide resin exhibiting an elongation of at least 50% comprises the condensation reaction product of polymeric fat acids or derivatives thereof capable of forming amides in reaction with a diamine, having a dimeric fat acids content of greater than about 80% by weight and a trimeric to monomeric fat acids ratio substantially within the area ABCD defined in the Figure of the Specification, a dicarboxylic acid of the general formula R11OOC.R.COOR11, where R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms and R11 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and a diamine of the general formula H2N.R1.NH2, where R1 is an aliphatic radical containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms. The fat acids are saturated, ethylenically unsaturated or acetylenically unsaturated, naturally occurring and synthetic monobasic aliphatic acids containing from 8 to 24 carbon atoms, many being specified. Specified dicarboxylic acids are adipic, succinic, glutaric, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic and terephthalic acids. Specified diamines are 1:2-diaminoethane and 1:3-diaminopropane. Examples are given.
