Abstract

A linear polyamide is made by reacting a diamine of the formula H2N.R1.NH2 (where R1\h is a dimeric fat radical), or a mixture thereof with another diamine with either tere- or iso-phthalic acid (or a nuclear substituted derivative or an amide-forming derivative thereof) or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms (or an amide-forming derivative thereof). The preferred method of preparation is by interfacial polymerization. The dimer diamines are derived from dimerised fatty acids. The examples disclose the preparation of polyamides from dimer diamines and: (1) terephthaloyl chloride; (2) isophthaloyl chloride; (3) hexamethylene diamine and terephthaloyl chloride; (4) piperazine and terephthaloyl chloride; (5) m-xylene diamine and tere-phthaloyl chloride; (6) ethylene diamine and tere-phthaloyl chloride; (7) hydrazine and tere-phthaloyl chloride; (8) N:N-g -amino-n-propyl decylamine and tere-phthaloyl chloride; (9) hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid; (10) to (14) hexamethylene diamine and adipoyl chloride; (15) to (21) hexamethylene diamine and sebacoyl chloride; (22), (23), (28) and (29) adipic acid; (24) sebacic acid; (25) and (27) dimethyl-1:4-cyclohexane carboxylate; (26) suberic acid; (30) and (32) 1:4-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid and (31) diethyl oxalate.ALSO:In examples A to C solutions in toluene of polyamides derived from dimer diamine and (1) terephthaloyl chloride, (4) piperazine and terephthaloyl chloride, and (8) N : N-g -amino-n-propyl decylamine and terephthaloyl chloride are drawn on tin plate by a doctor blade, the resultant films being baked at 300 DEG F. for 30 minutes.
