Abstract

766,927. Linear polyamides. CALIFORNIA RESEARCH CORPORATION. Sept. 22,1954 [Sept. 29, 1953], No. 27462/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 2 (5). Linear polyamides are formed from adipic; suberic or sebacic acid and a mixture of meta- and para-xylylene diamines containing 5-90 per cent by weight of the para-isomer. The xylylene diamines may be prepared from commercial mixtures of xylenes in which the para isomer commonly constitutes 25-30 per cent of the mixed meta-para-isomers. In Example I an aqueous solution of a salt was prepared from adipic acid mixed m- and p-xylylene diamines (90: 10). Water was removed by heating in a current of nitrogen. Polymerization commenced at 190‹ C. and a low polymer was formed. Continuous heating at 275‹ C. and low pressure produced a crystalline polymer melting at 245 C. Example II is similar. A number of polymers from adipic or sebacic acid and mixed diamines with varying proportions of the two isomers are also described and compared with polymers prepared from adipic or sebacic acid with pure meta- or para-xylylene diamine, and with polymers from meta-xylylene diamine and mixtures of adipic and terephthalic acid. The products of the invention are characterized by high melting points and heat distortion points and suitability for melt spinning or extrusion.
