Abstract

675,234. Dry shavers. WILKINSON SWORD CO., Ltd., RANDOLPH, H. B., and GRIFFITHS, R. Jan. 5, 1951. [Jan. 12, 1950] No. 810/50. Class 131. [Also in Group XXXV] In a dry shaver of the kind having a guard plate rotatably mounted on a handle and enclosing a cutter blade supported on the handle, the cutter blade is movable by electrical power means independently of and relatively to the guard plate. The device may be used as a manual dry shaver as disclosed in Specification 617,294 but if a source of alternating current is available it is utilised to reciprocate the cutter blade in a direction at right angles to the plane of the rocking movement of the guard in resonance with the frequency of the supply. As shown the driving element comprises an electromagnet having an E-shaped core 14, a winding 15 connected by leads 38 to a source of alternating current and an armature 17 secured to a pivoted lever 18 operatively connected to a carrier 30 for a cutter blade 35 loosely mounted on pins 36. The carrier 30 is slidable on a support 13 and the amplitude of movement is limited by coil spring 23 and stops 24, 24<SP>1</SP>. In a modification the driving element is in the form of an electric motor comprising a stator and a rotary armature driving a transmission element comprising a pivotally lever connected to the cutting blade. The motor comprises a make and break device for energising and de-energising the stator winding, the spindle on one side of the armature being arranged to operate the make and break and the spindle on the opposite side of the armature being mounted eccentrically on the armature and drivingly engaging a forked part of the pivotally mounted lever.
