ELECTRICALLY-OPERA'IED SCISSORS.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of scissors and particularly scissors used by barbers in hair cutting and is directed to the provision of an electrically operated scissors construction of this character.
An object of the invention resides in pro-' vlding a casing formed of separable sections, on which is mounted a stationary blade, while a cooperating movable blade is pivotally connected to the stationary blade beyond the separable casing, in which is mounted an electro-magnetically operated member connected with the movable blade for operating said blade in the operation of the member.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a construction of the character above mentioned, wherein the operating member for the movable scissor blade is provided with a special mounting and adjusting mechanism to permit the adjusting of the stroke of the member for operation within a desired cycle of movement to provide a special cooperation with the movable blade in operatingthe same.
Another object of the invention further includes the provision of a special mounting for scissor blade, wherein the same may be adscissor blade, relative to the stationary blade, for any desirable purposes.
A still further object of the invention resides in' providing a special form of housing structure having separable sections for completely housing the operating mechanism for the movable blade and to which the stationary blade is removably secured and arranged in special relation to the housing to provide for the ready and convenient posi-- tioning of the scissor blades to perform the cutting operation, while the housing will form'a handle having a predetermined contour for providing for the convenient gripping thereof in the hands and the same may be held in a most convenient manner while operating.
The invention further includes other objects and improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts which are more particularly ointed out in the following description anc in the claim directed to a preferred form of the invention, it being understood, however, that various changes may be made in the details the operating member for the movable a plurality of construction and in the arrangement of parts which are found desirable in the practical embodiment of the invention, without departing from the spirit and scope of the same as herein set forth.

Figures 1 and 2, a convenient body portion 1s provided, to be gripped by the hand, which 1s formed with a bulge portion 6 at the bottom thereof, adapted to fit the palm of the hand, while one side edge is formed with ofdepressions 7 for receiving the forefingers, in order that a convenient and firm grip of the device may be had. One bottom corner of the main easing section 2 is formed with a recess 8 in which is fitted the base portion of the stationary blade 9. This base portion of the stationary blade which is indicated by the numeral 10 extends at an obtuse angle relative to the blade 9 and secured in the recess 8 by the screw 11.
Beyond the end of the casing 1, the stationary blade 9 pivotally mounts thereon, the movable blade 12, through the connection afforded by the screw 13. The movable blade extends inwardly of the casing through the openings 14 formed therein and is bolt 17 carried by the operating member 18 mounted within the casing.
The casing is formed of cooperating hol low sections as illustrated, and the operat ing member 18, together with the pair of leaf spring members 19 and 20 is mounted on a U-shaped spring member 21, through the medium of the bolt and nut connection 22. While the operating member 18 is mounted on the longer leg of the U-shaped provided with a slot at 15, which receives the.
supporting spring member 21, the other leg is secured to one wall of the casing 2 by the bolt and nut connection 23, so that a suitable support is provided for one end of the operating member which will permit lateral oscillation thereof in a manner which will be presently described. The free end carries a lateral projection 24, which receives the bolt 17 for operating the movable scissor blade 12, in the oscillation of the memher. A set screw 25 is mounted in one wall or the main casing section 2, for cooperation with the leaf spring 20 which is adapted for adjustment to control the zone of oscillation of the member 18 within the casing, and which may be operated to adjust this zone of operation which will vary the zone of oscillation of the movable blade 12. A lock nut 26 is provided for preventing further adjustment of the set screw 25 after the same has been set to produce the proper oscillation for the member 18. A stroke adjusting screw 27 is mounted in axial alignment with the screw 25 and in the opposite side of the casing -2 therefrom, for engagement with the leaf spring 19, so that the same may be manually adjusted through the knurled head 28 at any time during the operation of the movable scissor blade for adjusting the stroke of the blade any desired degree. This is provided as for difierent cutting operations it is desired to change the stroke of the movable blade. The main body of the operating member 18 is offset, as indicated at 29, relative to the end portion 30, for the .purpose of accomodating within the housing the eleetromagnet 31 which is mounted in the laminated core structure 32 secured in the housing by suitable set screws 33. As it is necessary to provide a substantially large electro-magnet for the purpose of operating the member 18, it is necessary to provide the casing structure for the purpose of providing the same of convenient size, while at the same time housing the necessary size of electromagnet, and still provide sufficient space within the casing for the operation and housing of the member 18. Suitable cable connections, indicated at 34, are made with the electromagnet 31, for interposing the same in circuit with the desired source of alternating current, which will vibrate or oscillate the operating member 18, through the stroke or zone of movement controlled by the set screw 25 and the stroke adjusting screws 27.
The special relation illustrated between the casing and the movable and stationary blade structure is such as to provide for the convenient positioning of the blades for cutting operation, while at the same time having the casing held in the hands, in the most convenient position and manner, so that the invention may be used without appreciably tiring'the operator handling the same. It will further be seen that the novel and efficient casing is adapted to form a handle formed to fit the grip of the hand and characterized by a removable cover section providing immediate access to the operative parts of the device.
It therefore appears that a substantially novel housing structure has been provided for the operating apparatus of the movable blade, together with the special mounting relation of the scissors blade thereon and the provision of readily operating means for changing the zone of operation, as well as the stroke of the operating member for the movable blade.
\Vhat is claimed is:
A blade operating connection for electrically operating scissors comprising a reciprocating armature arrangement in a casing and adapted for actuation by an electric magnet carried therein, said armature having an extension formed thereon, a pin arranged transversely on the extension and a pivotally mounted blade having its inner end arranged in overlappin relation with respect to said extension and having a slot formed therein adapted to receive said pin and extending substantially at right angles to the direction of movement thereof.
