Abstract
674,297. Piles. PRELOAD ENTERPRISES, Inc. July 11, 1950. No. 17367/50. Class 68 (ii). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A hollow pile for containing or excluding liquids and gases comprises an annular wall 10 of cementitious or other material and of a thickness to sustain substantial compression and liquid impervious ribbon stock 14 of high tensile strength wrapped in overlapping relation about, and under tension in contact with the outer face of the wall thus forming a continuous diaphragm and placing the wall in prestressed compression. The ribbon stock may be a continuous piece wrapped helically or may be in the form of independent bands. The wall of the pile may be covered with a bitumastic preservative before the ribbon is applied and the overlapping joints sealed by a coat of paint, plastic, solder or fused sulphur. The pile may be further reinforced by a tensioned helical wrapping of round wire which may be arranged under or over the ribbon, and the ribbon (and the wire, if used) covered with a waterproof coating 18.
