Abstract
900,664. Making composite tubes. SMITH CORPORATION, A.O. Jan. 26, 1961 [July 25, 1960], No. 3061/61. Class 83 (2). A multi-layer cylindrical structure comprises a core 4 a plurality of layers 11 of sheet material 7 wrapped thereon with the starting edge 6 of the sheet secured to the core, and a blank 1 which has a thickness at one edge 2 corresponding to the thickness of the sheet and curved to fit said core with said thick edge adjacent the starting edge of said sheet, the blank being tapered in thickness away from the edge 2 to provide an approach of substantial circumferential length for wrapping of successive layers over the first layer. The blank 1 is tack welded to the core at the edge 2 only, the reinforcing sheet is tacked to the core leaving a groove which is filled with weld material 10 when the blank and the sheet material are welded to each other and to the core.
