Abstract

673,198. Cable and wire terminals. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. Jan. 30, 1950 [Feb. 1, 1949], No. 2360/50. Class 38 (i). [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] To prevent damage, caused by interrupting the natural flow of the material, to the plastic sleeve 26 placed over the ferrule 25 of a connector 27, as described in Specification 613,013, the crimping dies 37, 38 have their surfaces 35, 36 smoothly curved and their lateral edges 39 abruptly rounded off so that an elliptical crimp is produced. The ratio of the radius of the die surfaces to the width thereof, i.e. from one die edge 42 to the other die edge 42, ranges from 1: 1.5 to 1: 1.8, and is preferably 1: 1.7. The major axis of the ellipse is from 1<SP>1</SP>/ 5 to 2 times the minor axis. The edges 42 are preferably chamfered but may be sharp if the die material is hard enough, and the edges 28 of the ferrule also should be abruptly chamfered where they contact the sleeve. The length of the dies should not be less than that of the ferrule and at least four times the thickness of the crimped sleeve. The width of the die surface 35 should not be much greater than the diameter of the sleeve and the die 38 should so fit between the walls 40 of the die 37 that a smooth curve is produced at the meeting points. Additionally, one wall 40 may be on one die and the other wall on the other die. In modifications, two cables may be crimped together in a sleeve having an insulating sleeve either face-to-face, or parallel or alongside. Hexagonal crimps can be used as in Specification 585,507 to secure the cable insulation and the sleeve, Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown). As a further precaution the die surfaces may be rubber-lined, Fig. 14 (not shown). The dies are intended for use with hand-operated crimping tools.
