673,068. Weighing apparatus. GOMES, J. C. A. R. DA C., and ALLER, P. Nov. 22,1948 [Nov. 21, 1947], No. 30257/48. Class 143 In a weighing scale having a commodity pan Pc and a pan Pp for receiving unit weights, a variable counterbalancing force, corresponding to fractional weights, is also applied to pan Pp, through a knife edge C, by a beam B which is supported on an adjustable fulcrum roller 15. This roller is secured to a guided rack bar 16 and is adjusted longitudinally of the beam by a pinion 17 secured to a spindle 18 which drives a weight indicating pointer over a circular scale (not shown). The graduations on this scale are non-linear and are more closely spaced for small loads then for large ones. This disadvantage is removed by using pan Pp for the commodity, loading pan Pc with a weight equal to the maximum counterbalancing force exterted by the bar and then balancing the load by reducing the force exerted by the bar. In a modification (not shown), instead of loose weights a second and heavier bar is provided to effect unit weight adjustment. This form of counterbalancing is stated to be applicable to a number of types of scale other than the Beranger balance shown.
