Abstract
672,947. Shaving appliances. DAVIES, J. N. July 24, 1950. [July 23, 1949 ; Aug. 18, 1949] Nos. 19450/49 and 21456/49. Class 30. A shaving appliance comprises a blade holder, a liquid container provided with a wetting sector having a frame orifice or orifices through which liquid is supplied to the skin when in contact with the sector, the supply being interrupted when contact with the skin ceases, the wetting sector being such that a liquid seal against the free entry of air into the apparatus or the escape of liquid from the apparatus is formed by the liquid held in the orifice or orifices, provided that a layer of liquid is maintained on the inner side of the sector, and means for maintaining such layer throughout a shaving operation. To facilitate shaving, the skin is wetted by one or more wetting strokes, during which the blade may be shielded by any of the methods disclosed in Specification 672,948, between each shaving stroke. As shown a wetting sector 31 of wire gauze, metal strips or cotton fabric is secured across the opening of a tank 23 which can be rotated on the pivot 27 to bring the wetting sector into register with either of the apertures 22 in the casing 4. The tank has a partition 24 centrally apertured at 56 and positioned so that the razor may be held in any shaving position without recession of the hot or cold water, or other liquid suitable for shaving, from the inner surface of the wetting sector, and air bubbles entering through the sector are trapped between the wall of the tank and the partition. The tank is filled by immersing the casing 4 in liquid, the tank being rotated so that the plug 28 may be removed by the spring-urged rod 48. In modifications a diaphragm-type, pump or a centrifugal pump driven by an electric motor causes a forced flow of liquid past the wetting sector which may be in the form of rubber-sheathed rollers rotated by contact with the skin. In another form the blade-holding assembly is swivelled through, or is detachable to turn through, 180 degrees so that either edge of a blade may be used with a single wetting sector. The blade holder may be in the form of a casing provided with a tank and a wetting sector and receiving a complete safety razor. According to Provisional Specification the rollers forming the wetting sector may be in the form of balls and may be rotated or oscillated by an electric motor. Specifications 597,918 and 640,185 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
