In a safety razor a blade is displaced in its own plane so as to be honed against upper and lower guard members, a holder for the blade having at least one extension projecting into the hollow handle of the razor and engaging a sinuous guiding surface on a driving member reciprocable longitudinally of the handle to oscillate the blade in a direction transverse to its cutting edges. As shown, the blade 2 is mounted in a holder 1 which has arms 14 extending into the handle 8. The arms are connected together by a pin 11 which engages a sinuous slot in a driving member 5 rotatably connected to a releasable cover 9. Longitudinal reciprocation of the member 5 oscillates the arms 14 round pins 6, extending outwards from the arms 14 and engaging slots in the handle, and hones the blade against guards 3, 4. In a modification in which the upper guard is pivoted to the lower guard the blade holder comprises a yoke member with down-bent ends which pass through the perforations in the razor blade and are themselves apertured for studs formed by the ends of a stainless steel wire bent to U-shape and replacing the arms 14. In a further modification the arms are connected by two pins both of which extend through the sinuous slot and are spaced apart a distance equal to an uneven number of times half a wave length of the sinuous slot.
