Abstract
1451666 Windscreen cleaning systems ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 2 Dec 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 41217/73 Heading A4F A windscreen washer system comprises a washing liquid reservoir 12, heat insulated or of heat insulating material, a heat exchanger 36 whereby the washing liquid is heated by a vehicle engine coolant, and means, e.g. a pump 26 for feeding the heated washing liquid to the windscreen. The heat exchanger 36 is located in a vehicle radiator hose 25 and incorporates a thermostat 42 which closes as the engine cooling water temperature initially rises and energizes the electric pump 26 to circulate the washing liquid through the heat exchanger 36 via a solenoid operated change-over valve 28 and a filter 40. A further thermostat 44 in the reservoir 12 is operated to stop the pump 26 when the washing liquid temperature reaches about 80‹C. To operate the system, a switch is closed to energize the pump 26, if it is not already energized, and to actuate the solenoid valve 28 so that washing liquid is supplied via a detergent additive dispenser 30 to the washer nozzles. Water collected from a vehicle surface by a collector 11 is supplied to the reservoir 12 via an anti-freeze dispenser 18 and a reservoir 10. Alternative embodiments comprise (a) a single detergent and anti-freeze dispenser (50), Fig. 3 (not shown) and (b) a heating coil (27), Fig. 5 (not shown), immersed in the washing liquid in the reservoir 12 and having engine coolant flowing therethrough. The washing liquid may be fed to the windscreen via stationary jets or through a pipe (49), Fig. 8 (not shown) attached to each wiper arm and which directs washing liquid to one side only of the wiper blade, the washer pump being controlled by a switch on the wiper motor spindle to ensure pumping only when the washing liquid discharge leads the wiper blade. A sponge (53) may be mounted alongside each wiper blade through which the washing liquid is fed to the screen, mechanism being provided to raise the sponge during each return stroke when the wiper blade leads the sponge. Alternatively a sponge may be disposed on each side of a wiper blade.
