Abstract
1,029,004. Washing vehicles. E. CRUGNOLA, and A. SONZINI. May 28, 1964 [May 29, 1963], No. 22083/64. Heading B7J. [Also in Division H2] A vehicle washing and drying apparatus has an arch 10 which is reciprocated along rails 8 under automatic control, the length of travel being controlled according to vehicle length. The arch has carriages 11 including driven wheels, spray nozzles 15, a fan 12 delivering air through aperture 13 and six heat radiating lamps L which are covered by doors under the control of piston and cylinder mechanisms, Fig. 2 (not shown), when the vehicle is being washed. A manual control switch controls the supply of water from a pump to nozzles 15 during a pre-wash cycle; the supply of detergent, air and water to the nozzles via a mixer during a washing cycle; the supply of water for rinsing; and the uncovering and actuation of lamps L and fan 12 for the drying cycle; in various positions of the control switch' cooks can be operated to tap off water and the cleaning fluid through a spray or brush respectively. The pistons of the lamp doors are operated by compressed air acting on oil in a reservoir. The electric control circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes electric motors for carriages 11 and for the pumps which pressurize the air and water, push buttons which enable certain valves to be operated whereby water and cleaning fluid are supplied to the spray and brush respectively, various warning lamps and a time delay apparatus which can be adjusted to reverse the motors in carriages 11 when the portal has travelled the length of a vehicle. A limit switch F1 brings the portal to rest at its initial position where the manual control switch is operated to produce the next cycle in the washing and drying sequence. A switch in the control circuit also enables the doors of the heating lamps to be opened to enable the parabolic reflectors to be cleaned. During the drying cycle, the portal returns at a faster speed than for its forward movement.
