Abstract

640,185. Razors. DAVIES, J. NOEL-. Oct. 29, 1947, No. 28811. [Class 30] A razor unit is provided with means for supplying liquid in substantial volume to the skin in the path of the blade, and means for interrupting the supply automatically when the unit ceases to be in contact with the skin and interrupting appropriate portions of the supply of liquid when certain parts only of the unit cease to be in contact with the skin. The razor head a, Fig. 2, comprises a reservoir chamber e, a chamber f, and a waste chamber g which may be in communication with the interior of the hollow handle r. Hot or cold water or soapy liquid passes from the chamber e to the chamber f through a port f and is held in contact with the skin in advance of the blade c by means of a rectangular orifice h extending across the head for the length of the blade, The orifice h is normally closed by a series of shutters j individually pivoted on a common rod k and biased by counterweights j<SP>1</SP>. A series of pins m slidable in apertures in the head a contact the skin during shaving and are thereby pressed inwards to open the shutters. When the razor or parts thereof leaves the face, the corres ponding pin or pins are released and the corresponding shutter or shutters are closed to avoid escape of liquid. Liquid also passes directly to the blade through ducts l, closed or opened by members p<SP>2</SP> actuated by the pins m. Liquid passing downwards over the skin enters the chamber g through an aperture h2, and on immersion of the razor, liquid in the chamber g is returned to the chamber e through a port g<SP>1</SP> controlled by a stud q. The chamber e is filled through a cap e<SP>1</SP>. A plug cap r<SP>1</SP> screwed into the handle facilitates drainage and cleaning. The layer of liquid in contact with the skin may be from 1/16# to ## thick, and the breadth of the orifice may be from ## to ¢# and adjustable by sliding shutters. The blade c could be secured below the orifice h to allow an upward stroke. In another form, Fig. 5, a series of tanks o are provided, each carried on an arm o<SP>1</SP> pivoted at o<SP>2</SP> and balanced by a counterweight o<SP>3</SP>. The tanks are normally held by the counterweights against the mouths of feed tubes p, catches o<SP>4</SP> on the tanks holding open ball valves p<SP>1</SP> of the tubes p so that on exerting pressure by a hand-lever on a sac q, liquid therefrom is supplied to the tanks. The tanks o are set in shaving position in alignment with the orifice h by means of a setting bar actuated by either of two levers one at each end thereof, and are held in such position by spring catches on pins v. When the razor or parts thereof leave the face, the release of the corresponding pin or pins allows the corresponding tank or tanks to be moved back against the mouths of the tubes p. To fill the razor, a mounting part r is detached from the head-piece s and the sac q filled through an aperture q<SP>2</SP>. For using a razor unit inverted, springs are used instead of counterweights. The supply may be regulated by shutters, plugs or other closure components, and the liquid may be supplied direct to the skin or to sponges or the like in contact therewith. Specification 597,918 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the liquid used may be oil or oil and water, and a detergent powder or grease remover may be added. The liquid may be agitated, as by moving scoops, and pressure on the liquid may be exerted by pistons or compressed air. The supply orifice may be closed by a safety guard which drops when the razor is removed from the face. The liquid way be returned to storage by suction, such as by an aspirator and may be sieved to allow repeated use, and may also be applied to the skin by means of absorbent textile or like materials dipped into the storage liquid and transferred to the skin.
