Abstract

672,870. Closures; corking bottles &c. PREL, Inc. Aug. 7, 1947 [March 22, 1946], No. 21589/47. Classes 125(ii) and 125(iii) [Also in Group VI] A self-sealing pierceable closure for containers for liquids under pressure consists of a resilient loose fitting plug, formed with a domed inner surface and a circumferential flange of substantial thickness, a conical recess being provided on the upper and outer surface. The plug 5 fits a corresponding seating 4 on the container, the lower surface of the plug being provided with grooves 10, Fig. 4, or projections 9, Fig. 3, allowing liquid to be forced past the plug during filling. On completion of filling pressure is placed on the plug as shown in Fig. 8, the walls 3 being forced inwards, compressing the plug and effecting a seal. A washer may be provided to fit the upper surface of the plug thereby guiding a hollow dispensing needle into the centre of the plug. On withdrawal of the needle the internal pressure acting against the domed surface reseals the plug.
