Description

Nov. 24, 1959 D. P. MOORE 1 BOTTLES AND STOPPERS THEREFQR Filed April 30, 1958 M INVENTOR United States Patent BOTTLES AND STOPPERS Tl-lERElP-UR David Pelton Moore, Marlow, N.H.
Application April '30, 1958, Serial Na. 732,042
1 Claim. (Cl. 215--47) This invention relates to improvements in bottles and stoppers therefor, one object of the invention being the provision of a novel form of bottle neck and stopper insertable therein, to provide a gas tight joint, so that liquids such as carbonated drinks can be bottled and without leakage of the contents, and one that can be readily filled, stored and decanted.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stopper and bottle, whereby male and female portions interlock, the male member being compressible and of a greater cross sectional area than the female portion, and also the body of the stopper per se is a tight fit within the neck and at the mouth of the bottle.
Still another object of the present invention is the provision of a polyethylene hollow or skirted stopper having a head that provides a guiding means to facilitate the capping of carbonated drink bottles, in that the head is permitted to be gravity slid between directing rails to a point directly above the awaiting filled bottle, where by a pushing device the stopper is forced home with a gastight joint formed thereby.
In order that the invention may be understood and its advantages appreciated, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a section through the upper end of a bottle neck with the present plastic stopper in elevation therein.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the stopper per se.
Figure 3 is an exaggerated sectional view of the portion of the neck with its receptacle portion and the stopper at the part where the protuberance is formed thereof.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 8 designates the bottle neck having a single annular recess or groove 9, so that when the plastic stopper 10, is forced into the neck, the tight fitting cupped or hollow cylindrical portion is guided by the curved portion 14 of the neck, is moved until the annular projection 12, is tightly sealed in the groove 9 as the projection 12 is of a greater cross sectional area than the groove or recess, thus providing a gas tight stopper for this type of bottle.
Also the head of the stopper fits washer tight against the extreme end of the bottle neck, so that no washer or cork disk is necessary, and also in the capping of the carbonated drink filled bottles, the head acts as a guide to slide by gravity to a point where it is directly above the neck of the filled bottle to be easily and quickly driven or pushed home to seal the bottle.
In this instance the hollow or cupped portion 13 permits gas pressure from within the container to exert ice pressure to cause the Wall of the stoppers to more tightly fit within the necks of the bottles and also the pressing and contracting of the annular projection 12 into the annular recess or groove tends to and does pull the overhanging disk head of the stopper into closer air or gas tight engagement with the outer face of the neck of the bottle, adding an additional gas-tightness when this invention is used. Also the rim of the said fiat head acts as a suspending guide on the runway used in directing each stopper in place to be forced into the neck of the bottle. These advantages are very important in a stopper and bottle of this class.
The present objection to using cork, is the inconsistency of the product, that is, where it is possible, as in Europe, to permit the bottled wines to age, say for years, a hard cork, will do, but where this is impossible, a laminated cork is employed, and this sometimes permits leakage, particularly where carbonated liquids or wines are hottled. This invention, overcomes this, as the particular construction of a polyethylene stopper, the same is not efiected by the liquid, and where gas or liquid leakage is prevented, the desired stopper is had.
With a stopper of this type, the normal crown cork and seal, that is the crirnped on metal cap, the bottle containing the liquid can be provided with the internal annular recess, and in which event, the prevent plastic stopper can be used as a temporary stopper, after the metal cap has been removed and only a portion of the liquid has been decanted.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a glass bottle to contain gasified liquid and the neck of which is provided with an inner cylindrical stopper receiving surface terminating at the upper end in an outwardly curved stopper guiding surface, the cylindrical surface having therein an annular groove spaced inwardly from the upper end thereof, of a plastic stopper having a head with an annular flat neck engaging rim contacting the outer end of the neck of the bottle and an inwardly extending hollow open ended continuous portion cylindrical in shape and snugly received in the cylindrical portion of the neck, said cylindrical portion of the stopper having an annular protuberance positioned thereon intermediate the upper and lower ends of the hollow cylindrical portion thereof, said protuberance having a slightly greater cross sectional area than that of the groove and fitting therein in tightly compressed sealing relation therewith and tending when seated to draw and hold the rim contact at the outer end of the neck of the bottle to form an auxiliary tight gas-tight joint thereat, the cylindrical lower end portion of the stopper acting as a guiding and centering portion as the stopper is forced into the neck of the bottle.
