Abstract
Phenylhalogenosilanes are obtained by reacting silicon tetraphenyl with an excess of a silicon tetrahalide in a closed vessel at a temperature greater than 200 DEG C., but not substantially exceeding 500 DEG C., at least 1.5 mols. of silicon tetrahalide being used per mol. of silicon tetraphenyl, e.g. more than 1.7 to 1. The reaction temperature may be between 300 DEG and 350 DEG C. In the examples, phenyltrichloro-, diphenyldichloro- and triphenylchloro-silanes are prepared from silicon tetrachloride and silicon tetraphenyl.
