Abstract

671,854. Glass. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1949 [Dec. 24, 1948], No. 32112/49. Class 56. [Also in Group XL (a)] In the method of sealing a closure member to the glass envelope of an electric discharge device by induction heating of an interposed metal ring, residual compressive strain is introduced into the closure member during its manufacture, and disturbance of this strain by overheating is avoided by arranging the ring to have a line contact only with a beaded rim on the closure member. The residual strain is deliberately set up during the manufacture of the closure 11 by differential cooling; after it has been formed in a mould, one half of the mould is removed and an impinging jet of air 28 causes the outer surface of the glass 11 to cool more quickly than the inner surface which is still in contact with the other half 25 of the mould, so producing the desired condition of compressive strain.
