Abstract
605,837. Metal-to-glass seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., and SIMMS, C. H. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 561. [Class 36] A glass bead 4 by which a metal rod &c. 3 is insulated from a metal thimble 1 is formed on the rod by feeding a heated plastic glass rod to the rod whilst rotated by a chuck 5, the blob of glass 8, Fig. 2, being shaped (and dimensioned) by means of a profiled roller 6 mounted co-axially with, and adjustably-spaced from, the rod. The thimble 1 is then fitted on to the blob 8 with a bead 9 on the latter seating on the flange 2 of the thimble. For sealing the thimble to the glassed rod, this assembly is then placed in the recessed head 15, Fig. 3, of a jig 12, formed with a chamber 19 which can be evacuated by means of a suction-pipe 26. Radial gas-jets (not shown) are then played on to the thimble 1 to soften the glass which flows down to the shoulder 14 in the head 15.
