Abstract

584,409. Metal-to-glass seals. COLBORNE, R. H., and BOWMAKER, E. J. C. Oct. 24, 1944, No. 20568. [Class 36] A hard glass pinch for electron discharge and like devices is preformed, as by moulding or blowing, with a series of closed nipples 1 (Fig. 1) the tips of which are then removed (Fig. 2), as by grinding, for the assembly of the lead-in wires. The latter are then sealed between dies, with or without intermediate glass beads or sleeves on the wires. In the form shown, the pinch has an annular rim 2, which may be surfaced during the grinding &c. of the nipples, and a central aperture 4 for the usual exhausttube.
