[Also in Group XXX] In a cigarette-making machine wherein a continuous tobacco filler is fed to a device 19 which forms spaces in the filler and inserts stubs therein, the tobacco showered on to a conveyer 2 is passed through an arcuate shroud 6 and fed as a loose stream by a paddle wheel 5 on to a conveyor 4 which carries it into a confining passage 7 and delivers it on to a more slowly moving band 10,' whereby the tobacco stream is compacted endwise in the passage 7. The compacted stream, compressed into cylindrical shape by rollers 16, 17, passes to an intermittently rotating fluted drum 19 which inserts the stubs as described in Specification 669,557, the resulting composite filler passing on to a cigarette-paper web 21 which is wrapped therearound by a garniture 23 to form a composite rod.
