Abstract
669.469. Stainless steel alloys; annealing. ALLOY RESEARCH CORPORATION. July 16, 1947 [Sept. 6, 1946], No. 19021/47. Classes 72 and 82(i) A chromium-nickel stainless steel contains a chromium-like component consisting of Cr, Al 0.5-2.5 per cent, Si from incidental amounts up to 2.0 per cent and possibly Mo up to 3.0 per cent, the sum of the Cr content, Al content exceeding 1 per cent, Si content exceeding 1 per cent and Mo content being defined by the abscissae of the area ABCD of the diagram; a nickellike component consisting of C 0.02-0.12 per cent, Mn from incidental amounts up to 8 per cent and Ni not less than 3.5 per cent, the sum of the Ni content, 20 to 30 times the C content and one half the Mn content being defined by the ordinates of the area ABCD on the diagram; and the remainder being Fe and impurities. The alloy may also contain S or Se or both up to 0.5 per cent in total and P may be up to 0.04 per cent. The alloy may be heated at 1800- 2000‹F., then transformed at 1200-1600‹F., quenched and heated at 750-1000‹F. for sufficient time to obtain a substantial increase in hardness. Specification 669,468, is referred to.
