Abstract

669,197. Joints for sootblower tubes. WILSON, A. M. July 13, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8873/49. Class 99 (i) In a soot blower of the type including a supported conduit 3 as the means whereby the cleaning medium is ejected upon the tubes or other parts to be cleaned, the conduit having a number of nozzles at intervals throughout its length and being supported so that it can be given a turning motion about its axis in order to direct the cleaning medium over as large a surface as practicable and having a connection between the operating appliance and the nozzle conduit 3 made as a universal joint which comprises a tubular connector 4, 5, 6, approximately co-axial with the appliance and conduit, end parts on the connector having part-spherical convex surfaces, end attachments 7, 8, each secured to the connector and respectively secured to the operating appliances and nozzle conduit, and fittings 9 in the attachments having part-spherical concave surfaces which make fluid-tight joints with the convex surfaces and hold the connector against endwise movement relative to the operating appliance and conduit, there is provided means, such as projections 12 and grooves 13, between each attachment and the connector for transmitting the turning motion from the operating appliance to the nozzle conduit. Although in the embodiment shown the nozzle conduit rotates, but does not move axially the universal joint is capable of transmitting to and fro endwise movement to the conduit if desired. Specification 504,925 is referred to.
