March 8, 1950 [March 9, 1949], No. 5848/50 Classes 7(ii), 7(iii) and 7(vi) [Also in Group XXIX] To prevent leakage of circulating cooling medium from an annular space 5, Fig. 1, between the seat 6 of a poppet valve 3 and a machine part such as the head 1 or other appropriate part of an I.C. engine cylinder, the seat 6 is formed, on either side of the space 5, with a resilient portion 7 having a sealing surface co-acting with a corresponding surface on the head 1. The seat 6 is located both frictionally and by a swagedin ring 10. Cooling medium may be supplied simultaneously to two valve seats via a common inlet pipe 16, Fig. 4, the medium escaping either by a co-axial outlet pipe 17 as shown, when the valve seat cooling system may be independent of that for the cylinder head generally, or through openings 14, Fig. 1, to main cylinder head cooling spaces 15, the flow through the openings 14 constituting part or all of the main flow. The valve seat may form part of a valve cage, two or more seats being individually or mutually supplied with coolant passing to a main cooling space in the manner of Fig. 1, or a valve guide 27, Fig. 6, in the cage 25 being also cooled, when the operative medium from a supply space 28 flows between the cage and guide before reaching the space 31 in the seat via passages 29, 30 and escaping therefrom via a bore 33 or parallel bores in a cage rib 25a. In a cylinder head 34, Fig. 9, having two inlet valves, two exhaust valves and a central fuel injector 35, coolant admitted through a common inlet pipe 36 to an annular chamber 37 surrounding the injector 35 passes through passages 38 to annular spaces 39 around the valve seats 40, which may be as shown in Fig. 1, and escapes into the main cylinder head cooling space 41 via passages 42. A similar arrangement may be applied to a cylinder head having two exhaust valves only, or one inlet and one exhaust valve. The arrangement of Fig. 9 may be modified by providing a pipe connection to each passage 42, when the outflows from the seats may be passed individually to the outside or into separate cooling spaces of the head or other parts, whilst by reversal of the direction of flow the valve seats may be individually supplied. With opposed-piston engines, the invention may be used in a central zone of the cylinder.
