[Also in Group XXVII] A piston head at the lace of maximum heat accession has a heat transfer material of good thermal conductivity accommodated in the piston head at that localised part. An I.C. engine comprising a cylinder head a provided with a pre - combustion chamber b communicating with the compression space f through a passage d in an insert e, has a piston g with a hollow body m closed by a plate l accommodated in the head and containing a heat transfer substance k such as liquid metal, or a metal salt or a gas which is in the critical pressure condition at the working temperature of the engine. The insert m may be rolled, cast, forged or pressed into the piston and may be provided with ribs to assist heat dissipation; it may be tapered and held in position by a bolt; it may be cooled by a liquid sprayed on the underside of the piston.
