Abstract
668,537. Knives. SAEBJORNSEN, S. Sept. 29, 1948. [Sept. 29, 1947] No. 25364/48. Class 30. [Also in Group VI] A knife 1 for slitting a whale whilst alongside a ship, comprises a sickle shaped blade 1 with a transverse plate 2 at its tip preventing it from lifting in the carcase during cutting. A shaft 17 extends from the blade 1 to an operator on the ship who thereby guides the knife whilst it is pulled longitudinally through the carcase of the whale by a cable and winch. The shaft 17 is pivoted to the blade 1 in a plane at right angles to the knife and is secured at any desired inclination to the blade, by a spring- loaded catch 14 movable with the shaft 17 and capable of being brought into engagement with any one of a number of slots 15 in an arcuate edge of a plate 8 fixed to the blade 1. A line attached to the catch 14 is led up to the said operator. The knife has a forwardly directed tongue having holes 4 for a pin of a shackle 5 attached to a cable 6. Specification 438,491 is referred to.
