Abstract

668,061. Hot. gas engines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 21. 1947 [June 16, 1944], No. 7825/47. Class 7(i) In a closed cycle hot gas engine a pump which circulates a liquid cooling medium, for example water, through the engine cooler is driven by means which continue to operate after the supply of heat has been cut off. The Figure shows part of a hot gas engine comprising a heater 11 heated by a burner 13 and a cooler 12, 1.6 through which liquid cooling medium is circulated by pump 18. The pump is driven by an electric motor 19 controlled by a switch 20 which makes and breaks the electrical supply to the motor. The fuel supply to the burner is controlled by a cock 15. The cock 15 carries a collar 22 and the switch 20 a collar 23 which both have a cut-away portion. As long as the cock 15 is open the switch 20 cannot be opened. The fuel can only be turned on if the electric motor has been switched on. In a modification the electric motor is controlled by a bi-metallic switch and the circulation of the cooling medium is dependent on the temperature of the heater. In a further modification a circulating pump for a liquid cooling medium is driven by the 'engine crank shaft through a freewheel coupling. When the engine stops the pump keeps operating due to its own inertia or to that of a fly-wheel associated with it. The rotating parts of the pump may be of large mass. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to use of air as a cooling medium. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
