Abstract

[Also in Group XIII] In an air-heater for vehicles comprising a combustion chamber and a fan driven by an electric motor, series-connected thermocouples are mounted with their hot junctions in contact with the wall of the combustion chamber, the electric motor being initially supplied with power from the vehicle battery and subsequently with thermo-electric power when the latter reaches a predetermined value. As shown, the wall 30 of the combustion chamber is provided with an electrically insulating layer 31 and heat conducting projections 32 on which the thermocouples 34 35 are mounted. Air is forced over the thermocouples and over heatexchange fins 37 attached to the cold junctions serving to cool the latter and the heated air is supplied to the vehicle interior. The switching over from the battery to the thermo-electric supply may be effected automatically by the switch illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), or manually. The fuel supply to the combustion chamber, the combustion air supply and the ignition of the mixture may all be performed thermo-electrically. Iron-constantan thermocouples are used and the thermo-electric supply may be interrupted and stepped-up if necessary
