Abstract
A portable air heater, particularly for use in caravans &c., wherein the air to be heated is passed upwardly through a casing 1 by a fan 5 over the outside surface of a combustion chamber 11, 12 provided with a depending gas burner includes a thermoelectric generator 9 for supplying current to recharge a battery F used for lighting purposes. The thermoelectric generator, which forms the base of the combustion chamber, comprises series connected cells 9c disposed between an upper plate surface 9a heated by the burner and a lower plate surface 9b cooled by the air to be heated. Radial vanes 10, 17, 18 are provided to improve heat transfer. A rocking shutter 24 mounted on a spindle 23 is movable to direct the heated air from the casing either through openings 1c into the area to be heated or through openings 1d to the outside. The burner which comprises a Venturi tube 14 connected to a conical truncated chamber 15 closed by a perforated plate 16 is supplied with gas through pipe 20 and air through pipe 22. Combustion gases leave the chamber 12 through a discharge tube 13. A thermostat 7 controls valve 39 supplying gas to the burner. A safety circuit includes a thermo-couple 43 and a bimetal switch 10a both connected to a safety cut-off valve 38. The thermocouple senses the flame and the bi-metal switch acts to cut out fuel supply in the event of the fan 5 stopping causing the vanes 10 to over-heat. During start up only, additional fuel is supplied to the burner by way of a valve 42 to facilitate ignition. A cam (54, Fig. 4, not shown) operated by turning a knob 53, ensures simultaneously the opening of the safety cut-off valve 38, closing of the ignition circuit incorporating a filament 50, and supply of additional fuel. Provision of a by-pass pipe 40 having a calibrated opening 41 ensures a pilot operation of the burner when the valve 39 is closed. Circuitry including relays is provided to connect the generator to the battery F for charging purposes when required.
