Abstract

717,225. Cooling systems for internalcombustion engines; heating vehicles. BAIER, O., BAIER, W., BAIER, S., BAIER, L., BAIER, W., and SCHLUMPRECHT, E., [trading as BAIER KOMMANDIT-GES., WEBASTO-WERK, W.]. Nov. 21, 1952 [Nov. 21, 1951], No. 29465/52. Classes 64(2) and 64(3) Fig. 1 shows a heating and cooling system for motor vehicles in which the internalcombustion engine 1 is connected to a radiator 4 by flow and return pipes 2, 3. A thermostatically controlled valve 5 in the pipe 2 allows the coolant to flow to the radiator when the temperature of the coolant rises above a predetermined value. A circulation pump 6 is inserted in the return pipe 3. Coolant is led off the pipe 2 . by a pipe 7 to a pump 18 which circulates the coolant through a heating appliance 8 whence it passes through a discharge pipe 9 and supply pipes 10, 11 to the return pipe 3 and is then pumped into the coolant chambers of the engine 1. Thus the appliance 8 supplies heat to the engine for starting purposes. The discharge pipe 9 is connected to the supply pipe 10 through a three-way cock 12 which is connected to a by-pass pipe 13. Thus the coolant can be led through heater elements 15, 16 to heat the interior of the vehicle or to demist the windscreen or similar purposes. The coolant is led from the elements 15, 16 to the supply pipe 11 which passes through the battery'17 of an electric starter for the engine so that the battery may be heated to facilitate starting in cold weather. The pump 18 for the heater 8 and a fuel supply pump. 21, a blower 22 for combustion air and an atomizer 23 are driven by an electric motor 24, Fig. 2. The fuel, which may be, that used for the vehicle, is delivered by the pump 21 through a pipe 25 to the atomizer 23 whence mixed with air it passes into the combustion chamber 26 to be electrically ignited. The combustion gases pass through the cylindrical jacket 27 of the chamber and are deflected at the end wall 28 to pass between radial fins 29. The fins, heated by the passage of the gases, conduct heat to the annular chamber 20 through which the coolant circulates before being led off by the pipe 9.
