Class 106 (ii). [Also in Group XXIX] A gauging apparatus connected to a source 6 of compressed air or other pressure medium has a resiliently-mounted member 19 movable in accordance with the dimension being gauged but whose movement is suddenly amplified by an adjacent magnet 20 whenever its distance from the magnet is sufficiently reduced, thus causing the member 19 to close a jet 22 controlling a piston or the like which may then reject the item being gauged as having dimensions not conforming to those permissible. As shown, any axial movement of a feeler member 11 from its position of symmetry causes a pressure difference to be set up in a pair of bellows 14 and 15 whose movable extremities are connected together by a frame 16. The resulting movement of the bellows, and hence the frame 16, are imparted to the members 19 through spring blades 17 mounted on a main frame 18. The members 19 are connected to or comprise a magnetic material. The source 6 of compressed air is also connected through chambers 25 and pipes 24 to orifices 22 extending through magnets 20, one magnet being spaced from each of the members 19. The magnets 20 may be of the permanent or the solenoid type. When the movement of a member 19 is such that it is suddenly attracted to its magnet 20, to close the orifice therethrough, there is a sudden rise of air pressure in the associated chamber 25 which may be used to actuate, through a pipe 28, a piston or other member as described above. With the arrangement shown, one of the two chambers 25 can be used to displace oversized items in one direction and the other, chamber can be used to displace undersized items in another direction. According to a modification, a single member 19 is disposed between the poles of a single magnet.
