Abstract
667,774. Electrolyte apparatus. KREBS & CO. Jan. 31, 1949 [Feb. 4, 1948], No. 2555/49. Class 41. Electrolytic apparatus for making alkalimetal chlorates comprises a closed cell 7 to which brine is supplied under pressure through an opening 17 at the bottom of the cell, liquid with gas bubbles being withdrawn at the top through outlets 18 leading to. a manifold 19 where the liquid is separated from the gases. The base of the cell has a metal plate 1 formed with tapering grooves 4 to receive detachable graphite anodes 5 between which are placed perforated sheet cathodes 8 welded to the metal cover of the cell. The anodes and cathodes are preferably such that the combined current density at the surface of each cathode and anode is substantially constant at all levels of the electrodes. The anodes, which may be impregnated with an electricallyconducting product to prevent deterioration by the brine, are secured in place by a putty which remains comparatively soft, enabling easy replacement of the anodes.
