Abstract

Cells; electrodes, supporting.-In an immersed electrolyzer of the press type, the bottom and side edges of the electrode platas e do not extend to the outer surfaces of the non-conducting frames c carrying the diaphragms c<1>, and are fitted in recesses in the frames so that external current leakage is prevented. A gas-collector h is moulded in one piece from cement, cement composition, or pottery, and has partitions extending down into contact with the frames and also with the electrodes if these are bi-polar. Two pipes opening into alternate compartments of the collector remove the gases. The top sides of the frames c are made narrow to allow passage of gas, and electrolyte can enter the cells through small apertures i in the bottom of the frames. Two sheets of packing material are pressed against the side edges of the frames by rigid plates. Very porous diaphragms may be employed.
