Abstract

Fatty acid salts of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin in which the fatty acid has not less than 5 and not more than 11 carbon atoms, particularly the propionate caprylate and undecylenate, are prepared by titrating the antibiotic base with the fatty acid to a pH of 6.5 to 7, if required with the addition of ethanol to facilitate solution of the fatty acid. In a preferred method, the sulphate or hydrochloride of streptomycin or dihydrostreptomycin is dissolved in water, electrodialyzed and the catholyte titrated with the fatty acid. The product is filtered and the salt obtained by freeze drying. Alternatively the base may be obtained by the use of an anion exchange resin.
