667,593. Locomotives. DOHERTY. J. M. July 3, 1950 [Jan. 17, 1950], No. 1137/50. Classes 79(i) and 79(ii) [Also in Group XXXII] In an internal combustion engine-driven locomotive the main structure carrying the engine unit and change speed and reversing mechanism is rigidly supported at its rear end by a four-wheeled bogie and its front end rests on a plate or slide carried at the centre of another four-wheeled bogie, the bogies being connected together by a pin joint to accommodate relative movements of the bogies. As shown the main structure 13 of the locomotive is supported by the rear bogie 11 rigid therewith and the front bogie 10 pivoted at 12 to the bogie 11 and supporting the front end of the structure 13 by means of a bracket 14 on the structure bearing on a plate 15 on the bogie 10. The engine 16 drives the axles of the bogies through a clutch 21, a flexible coupling 22 and a casing 18 containing a clutch controlled two-speed gear mechanism and a reversing mechanism. The output shaft 30 of the reversing mechanism carries a bevel pinion 32 meshing with a bevel gear on a cross shaft 34, which carries sprocket chains connected to the axles of the rear bogie. The front end of the shaft 30 is universally jointed at 37 to a telescopic shaft 38 connected by a universal joint 40 to a shaft which is connected by bevel gearing and chains to the axles of the front bogie 10. The structure 13 is extended at the front end to carry a plate 19 to which is fixed a ballast weight 20.
