667,001. Chucks and sockets. ARNOLD, J. C. (Benjamin, M. L.). Jan. 30, 1950, No. 2400/50. Class 83 (iii). A tool or work-holder comprises a housing 1, at least three members 6, 10, 15 universally jointed to the housing and transversely movable relatively to each other, an elastic member 21 disposed adjacent the member 15, and a clamping nut 25 adjustable relatively to the housing for applying pressure to the member 21 so as to clamp the members 6, 10, 15 resiliently in adjusted angular and lateral position relatively to the housing. The housing 1 has an enlarged head 3 provided therein with a conical seating 4 and pegs 5 to engage diametrically-opposite recesses 9 and a spherical surface 7 respectively, formed in the seating member 6. The latter member is connected loosely by means of further slots 9 therein to the member 10 which is provided with thrust balls 11 and projections 14 adapted to loosely-engage slots 17 formed in a flange 16 on the member 15. A ring 20 is interposed between the flange 16 and the member 21 which is formed of rubber or the like so that, with the parts in adjusted position, the member 21 can be caused by the nut 25 to deform and transmit a substantially even pressure around the line of contact between the surface 7 and seating 4, the frictional resistance along the line of contact being sufficient to prevent the member 21 from regaining its original form and returning the tool R into parallel relationship with the housing 1. A collet 22 to grip the tool R is inserted in the member 15 and caused to operate by means of a nut 28, a ring 27 and inclined surfaces 18 and 19 formed in the bore of the member 15. Modifications of the invention comprise the provision on the housing 1 of a projecting part adapted to bear within a recess in the member 6, the direct bearing of the member 21 on the member 10, the provision of one or two rings 20 with or without annular flanges for engaging the bore of the member 21 and the replacement of the member 15 by a flanged sleeve adapted to grip the tool by means of screws or by a flanged sleeve formed with a morse-tapered bore to grip the tool. In the latter case, the sleeve extends into the bore of the housing 1 which is provided with a slot to receive the drift adapted to eject the tool from the tapered bore.
