Class 120 (i) Apparatus for opening cotton and like fibrous material comprises a plurality of revolving beaters, having vertical or nearly vertical axes, enclosed in a common casing and cooperating with a common grid surrounding the beaters, the beaters being arranged so that their blades co-operate in opening the material by the a l t e r n a t e impingement thereof upon masses -of cohering fibres. As shown, the opener comprises two beaters, with relatively inclined shafts 8, 9, surrounded by a common grid 16 in an outer casing 1, and independently driven in the same direction by motors 13. The axial setting of the blades 11 of one beater is staggered in relation to that of the blades of the other beater. The footstep bearing 19 of each beater shaft can be raised or lowered for regulating the distance between the blade tips and the grid bars or for varying the setting of the blades of one beater relative to those of the other. Material to be treated enters the grid through a pneumatic trunk at 17; the air stream passes upwardly through the casing and, owing to the staggering of the blades, the material is treated by the blades of the two beaters alternately, and is discharged vertically through a duct 18. The material may be fed to the base of both beaters, and may be discharged horizontally, the beaters in this latter case being rotated in opposite directions. More than two beaters may be used.
