[Also in Group XIII] In an air heater, in which a mixture of fuel and air, drawn into a combustion chamber 13 periodically through a non-return valve assembly 33, is fired in that chamber by the high temperature of the latter and a flame tube 14 receives the resultant hot gases, a fan 18 impelled by a turbine 47 driven by the gases from the flame tube directs a stream of air, uncontaminated by the combustion gases, over the combustion chamber through an air tube 10 which surrounds it. The outlet 17 for the hot gases is outside the air tube 10. In the form shown, the non-return valve assembly comprises saucer-shaped valves 33 fitting in holes in a plate 32, upward movement of the valves being limited by metal gauze 34. Initially, a current of air supplied by a hand-driven fan 39 is mixed with fuel from a reservoir 26, enters the combustion chamber 13 past the valves 33, and is fired by a sparking plug 43 energized by a magneto 42 which is also hand-driven. The explosion closes the valves 33, which re-open when the gases have flowed along the tube 14, so that a further mixture can enter. When the walls of the chamber 13 are hot enough, operation of the fan 39 and magneto 42 is stopped. The heater may be mounted on skids carrying rubber-tyred wheels.
